About the Area
Mobile, the Birthplace of Mardi Gras, is located at the head of Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. The largest municipality on the Gulf of Mexico between New Orleans and St Petersburg, FL. Mobile is only about an hour’s drive from beautiful sugar white Gulf beaches.
Mobile began as the first capital of colonial French Louisiana in 1702 and was later ruled by Britain, then Spain and became a part of the United States in 1813. Organized Carnival celebrations began in Mobile in 1702 and today, Mobile’s annual Mardi Gras celebration tops the list of area “Events and Festivals.”
